Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill (Scotland) Bill

FATE Submission to Scottish Committee Inquiry

FATE today made its submission to the ongoing call for views by the Scottish Parliament’s Health Committee. The Committee asked for views on this Bill which is currently being considered by them ahead of public hearings which will take place later this year. Commenting on their submission. Emma Cooper, Convenor of FATE said,

“We welcome the opportunity to contribute to this debate and strongly support moves to legalise access in Scotland to Voluntary Assisted Dying. For too long our citizens have had to take matters into their own hands, at times with terrible consequences.

For those who can afford it, it has meant having to sneak to Switzerland, often months before they are truly ready to die and paying huge amounts of money in order to access a safe and peaceful end to their lives. For those who can’t, the options are bleak. Botched attempts to end their life, searching the internet for solutions, often offered by individuals and groups preying on these most vulnerable individuals or by simply starving and dehydrating themselves to death.

This has to change and with this Bill, FATE believes that people living here in Scotland will have the opportunity to access what they deserve – the option of a legal, secure and peaceful death at a time and place of their choosing. This is why we fully support the efforts led by Liam McArthur MSP and will continue to campaign for the passing of this Bill into law.”
